There is a real nice blog post that posts some “Why use Spring” questions. The post would probably fall into a “not in favor” of Spring category, but it is a well-written post and very much worth the read. Don’t skip the comments on the post. You will learn a lot by reading them. Some were left by Spring commiters.

Craig Walls was kind enough to provide a zip file containing the code that he created in his presentation last week. I’ve placed the zip file here for download.
I guess this post will be a good place to start any discussions related to the code. Feel free to post comments on questions here. And if you (that you means any readers) have an answer to a question please feel free to post an answer.

Spring Dallas User Group, 1/18/2006
*****
NOTICE: This is our first meeting so come and discuss the future of this group and our current plans for it.
*****
TOPIC:
- Spring Basics
PRESENTATION:
Spring does a lot of things… It’s a web-framework, provides an ORM abstraction layer, enables lightweight remoting, and provides POJOs with declarative transactions and security. But at its core Spring enables you to decouple your application objects with dependency injection and aspects. In this session, Craig will demonstrate the basics of Spring DI and AOP with live coding examples.
PRESENTER:
Craig Walls - “Spring In Action” author.
Craig Walls has been developing software for oven 11 years professionally (and longer than that for the pure geekiness of it). He is the author of Spring in Action and XDoclet in Action, both published by Manning. When he’s not slinging code, Craig spends as much time as he can with his wife, daughter, 7 birds, 4 dogs, 2 cats, and an even-fluctuating number of tropical fish.
WHO TO TELL:
Tell your friends in the office who are interested in leaning about Spring based applications. Point them to the Spring Dallas UG website for further information.
WHERE TO GO:
Our meetings are at Nerdbooks in Richardson TX. Directions can be found on their website. Remember to come at 6:30 to socialize with everyone. Please be seated and ready to learn by 7:00pm.
*** Nerdbooks is our location sponsor and is providing a meeting place. Show up early and take a look at their large selection of Java related books.

I am excited to announce the formation of the Spring Dallas Users Group!
Answering the question of why a user group dedicated to the study and mastery of the Spring Framework, I will directly quote the first sentence in Professional Java Development with the Spring Framework, “The Spring Framework is a major open source application development framework that makes Java/J2EE development easier and more productive.”
Andy Hoffman and myself, Erik Weibust, are putting together an exciting list of presentations and speakers for the Spring Dallas User Group. We have secured an outstanding meeting location and sponsor with Nerdbooks in Richardson.
Also, we have lined up a great speaker to kick-off the group. Craig Walls, author of Spring in Action, will be laying the foundation for the next several months in his “Introduction to Spring” presentation next Wednesday, 1/18/06.
Look for more information on the group to be posted here at springdallasug.org. We plan on publishing a tentative schedule, as well as directions to Nerdbooks, a bit about ourselves, and some links to Spring related sites, articles and tutorials.
