TOPIC: Spring G2X Summary by Craig Walls, Erik Weibust, Andy Hoffman and Andy Rubalcaba

Abstract: - Last month several from our group were fortunate to attend the Spring G2X event in Chicago. They will share their stories and what they have learned from the Seminar with our group. From the new Spring Social modules to the latest on Spring ROO to the new inventions in the Groovy/Gails area and maybe even a little on Spring 3.1 they will cover it all. Bring your questions to the meeting as we will run this as a open panel. They may be talked into a short presentation but it should be mostly discussion about Spring and Groovy/Grails.
BIO: Craig Walls has been professionally developing software for over 15 years (and longer than that for the pure geekiness of it). He is a senior engineer with SpringSource and is the author of Modular Java (published by Pragmatic Bookshelf) and Spring in Action and XDoclet in Action (both published by Manning). He’s a zealous promoter of the Spring Framework, speaking frequently at local user groups and conferences and writing about Spring and OSGi on his blog. When he’s not slinging code, Craig spends as much time as he can with his wife, two daughters, 5 birds and 3 dogs.
Erik Weibust is a Senior Architect with Credera. Prior to joining Credera, Erik was a member of the Office of Architecture at Countrywide Financial.
Erik has more than 10 years of business and information technology experience. His career started at Neiman Marcus where he worked on the inventory system and then moved to their online team where he helped with the initial launch of the NeimanMarcus.com web presence. Erik left the retail business for the high-tech, web-based, hotel travel booking company Pegasus Solutions. While at Pegasus, Erik gained experience developing and maintaining massively-scalable, clustered Java EE applications that powered the majority of hotel transactions on the internet. In addition, Erik gained experience in the mortgage industry while working for Custom Credit Systems developing custom mortgage applications, and most recently while working at Countrywide Financial.
Erik has a passion for learning, promoting and teaching Java technologies. Erik has been active with the Dallas/Fort Worth Java User group (JavaMUG) for over 7 years and currently serves as the elected President. Erik also started and continues to lead a Java User group that focuses on the Spring Framework (Spring Dallas User Group), a leading, lightweight Java EE framework.
Andy Hoffman has been involved with development since punch cards were required. For the last 10 years though, he’s been focused on Java related technologies and is currently contracting at a local airline. He does some part-time work at CCCCD helping convert people to Java and Spring. When not at work, Andy reads science fiction, games on the computer and follows politics.
Andy Rubalcaba is a Sr.Lead Developer for Fractech. He currently works in the Oil and Gas Fracturing Industry developing High Performance Applications for Real Time Data Acquisition. As consultant he has mainly worked with clients around the DFW metroplex to develop Spring backends that are hooked up to Flex Frontends. He has over 6 years experience developing with Java technologies, including EJBs, Struts, JMS, Spring MVC, Hibernate, and MyBatis. He holds a degree in Computer Information Systems from DeVry. When Andrew is not programming he enjoys traveling and spending time with his 2 nieces in South Texas.

TOPIC: Spring Hello World, Spring Threading and Spring Persistence Examples by Brian Hurley

Abstract: - Getting started with Spring is very easy and I’m going to start by showing an example web app that I created for my company to show the people that know Java but have not experienced dependency injection or Spring MVC yet. This just shows the basics of getting started. Next I’ll show how to create scheduled and asynchronous threads and launch them from a controller. This part builds on the first presentation but just uses the annotation style of defining Spring threading. I’ll go over why I didn’t build any XML example also. Lastly, we will cover persistence examples using straight Java, Spring JDBC, MyBatis and Hibernate. These examples will just use basic CRUD operations but give you a getting started example and a good comparison between the difference techniques.
BIO: Brian Hurley has been programming for about 30 years. He has been working for Texas Instruments for the last 21 years and programming Java for the last 9 years. Brian is the Secretary of JavaMUG (http://javamug.org) for the last 2 years, and has the leader of the Dallas Spring User Group for 2010. When not programming he likes to play with his 3 kids and two dogs.
